Team leadership
Introduction
The increasing focus on teamwork puts emphasis on the role played by the team leader in guiding and structuring the team experiences, which foster the development of teamwork skills (Johnson, Beyerlein, & Beyerlein, 1997). Primarily, team leaders enhance the developmental progress of the team. Besides, the team leaders are tasked with enhancing coherence and adaptive capabilities among the team members. Fundamentally, leaders can promote team effectiveness by enhancing participative leadership, shared responsibility, effective communication, rapid response, and promoting creativity (Kinicki & Fugate, 2012). The team leaders should establish team charters that highlight how the teams will operate. Furthermore, the leaders should consider the members to be included in the team based on the responsibilities of the team and the capabilities of the group members.
Objectives
1. By the end of this session, the participants will recognize the ways through which work teams are constructed and establishing exemplary team leadership. Besides, the learners will recognize the impacts born by the team leader on the whole group (Sivasubramaniam, Murry, Avolio, & Jung, 2002).
2. The learners will also recognize the leadership theoretical models and hypotheses and ways through the leaders can boost team effectiveness and promote group cohesiveness. Moreover, the learners will identify the impacts born by a team on the team leader (Zaccaro, Rittman, & Marks, 2002).
Conclusion
It is worth to note that the trends in the workplaces are shifting towards group-oriented work teams. Therefore, the shifting trends place responsibilities on the team leaders to foster the overall productivity of the organizations by enhancing team effectiveness (Johnson, Beyerlein, & Beyerlein, 1997). Consequently, the team leaders should choose team members with capabilities coinciding with the teams’ responsibilities. To promote team effectiveness, team leaders should enhance effective communication and participative leadership (Kinicki & Fugate, 2012). Besides, the leaders should promote collective problem-solving among group members to mitigate setbacks, which can derail the progressive development of the team.
