While reading the case and selecting the hiring decision, I was making my decision based on three major rules: first, what is the environment of investing bank at that time. Second, what is the strategy has been set for both for company development and hiring of SG Cowen, and then, third, what kind of skills or backgrounds of employees are needed in order to implement and executive the strategy. Based on these three major rules, more details came out to evaluate the candidates. I will illustrate them below.

The first person has been eliminate from the list is Martin Street. Although he does have strong background of being a leader and also having a dynamic personality and confidence, which are appealing to interviewers, I still eliminate him because of his hesitation to join in SG Cowen, he came to Wharton toward the middle of the recruiting period and he was always involved in recruiting events at other firms. As the case says “we will not stray from that focused sectoral agenda and continue to attract, the highest-quality professionals who believe in that business model.” Seems like his performance is not showing his believes in the current business model.

For the rest of three candidates, I would like to give my votes to Natalya Godlewska and Andy Sanchez.

Natalya Godlewska has a competitive financial background, analytical knowledge as well as her understanding of the financial markets. And also, she has a diverse culture background and skill of four languages, which are also her irreplaceable advantage if the company wants to expend their business to Europe. Some interviewers may have concerns about her performance during the small group talking and dinner night that she may not fit the company’s culture, however I think probably it will not be a problem since the not-good-enough performance may because she is not very confident in her English skill, but not because of her personality, and this problem may only be temporary as time goes by, since she has proved her language talent by speaking four different languages and the commons of her references.

For Andy Sanchez, we can all see his strong background and experience as an entrepreneur, this experience are all practical and from real business world instead of only theory on textbook. Admittedly his GPA is not as good as enough, but there is a high possibility of the low GPA only because he did pay too much attention on his study instead of he is not good enough, and this high possibility assumption is also supported by his performance of GMAT and SAT tests. What’s more, Sanchez’s interviewers all found him enthusiastic and personable that is crucial important.

And also, when I was thinking and planning my strategy of recruiting, based on the number of needing, we need two employees this year, so I was considering these two new employees as a group, who will be working together in
