TEM 8, test for English major grade 8, is the highest level-test for English major students in China. It is held oncea year in Marchit and should be taken during the end of the last academic year. Before the 2005 reform, the maximum score was 100 points. College students in China now spend quite a large amount of their study time devoted to learning English.

The first part of the test is listening, which consist of a minilecture, a conversation, and several news broadcasts. Then comes reading, general knowladge(knowledge about American and Britian culture, literature, and some simple languistic ideas), proofreading & error correction, and the last part is writing. It is supposed that one should masterthe use of at least 13000 common English words if he/she want to pass the exam. The text, which takes 195 minutes, has a limit-time at each part.So one is not only required to have a large vocavulary but also a quick mind.

Passing the TEM 8 is important for English Majors. Graduates may only be able to get a degree or a good job if they can pass the TEM 8 with a high score. On nearly every campus, one can see students reciting text or vocabulary in the mornings, and generally practicing hard for English exams. Furthermore, a great number of students take extra language training classes on evenings and weekends to improve their skills, or pay for private native-speaking tutors.

This year's test was held yesterday, which is believed much more easier than last year's.Still most of the students in my school feared that they may fail. However the result won't come out until the end of May.So all they can do in this period is waiting.Waiting for a good news or for tears. All in all, I hope that everyone can get a satisfactury result.
