Temple Grandin was diagnosed with autism, which enabled her to think in pictures and connect them together. Before attending college, Temple spent the summer at her aunt's ranch. She was fascinated by this device that hugs cows from both sides and relaxes them before the slaughtering process. After an incident, Temple crawled into the device and it immediately calms her down, so she built a squeeze machine that modeled after the device and brought it along to college. Temple's new roommate walked in on her in the squeeze machine and later caused the school to believe its use had a sexual purpose and forcefully removed it, but eventually Temple did a study on the machine proving it's only a calming device and they finally let her keep it in the dorm. In my opinion, the school should have really be more understanding and at least try to prove their claim before enforcing the punishment. After that, Temple got a new roommate, who was blind. They became really good friends afterward and Temple actually tolerated it when she held on to her arm for guidance.
The movie flashes back to when Temple was attending boarding school. She met Dr. Carlock who support her in her education and career. It's good that Temple finally found someone who's there to encourage her at all time. Dr. Carlock eventually passed away. After graduating from college, Temple worked at ranches and wrote articles about cattle for several magazines. She did experience some difficulty in convincing people to let her do studies on cows simply because she's a woman and the way she acts because of her autism. The guard at a ranch wouldn't let her in at all and the cowboys put bull intestines on her car's windshield. These kind of behaviors are just plain cruel in my opinion, people shouldn't deny one's opportunity because of their race and disabilities. Temple didn't give up at all, she tried again and again, and finally got the signature that allows her to conduct her study.
Later in the movie, Temple was shown designing a new dip and redesigning a slaughterhouse so there would be a humane way to handle cattle. She attended an autism convention and tells the audience about how she was able to complete her education and have a successful career despite of her autism, and also how her mother plays an important role in all of this. Temple Grandin is a role model for everybody to look up to, she overcame her difficulties and achieve beyond people's expectation.
