Texting and Driving is it really that dangerous or unsafe?

Texting and driving is unsafe and everyday more and more people are creating accidents and also dying or killing others by this action. Do you know what this is? Where r..........? It is a text a young man was typing while driving before he hit a tree and gave himself a TBI (Traumatic Brian Injury). In todays society people are so depended on technology for many different things. How many of people would admit that they text and drive? I'm sure out of embarrassment no one would but stop and think about it. Society love their cell phones now because they can text, email, and even use social networks on the go. I'm sure when the late Steve Jobs came up with the Apple iPhone he didn't think about the ramifications it could or would have on society. This problem doesn't just effect kids, teens but also adults as well. Over the past 2 years just here in the Treasure Valley that have been reported of at least 5 accidents and 3 deaths that are tied to texting or uses a cell phone. Not only do we put ourselves in danger when using them but we put those around us our families at risk too. It's selfish of us to think that a text message or email is more important than staying alive.

Six years ago I also had an issue with this while driving. I was driving a truck at the time with a friend of mine with me and we were heading out towards Marsing to go fishing. We came to a stop sign with some cars in front of me and so slowly I was pulling forward and texting and didn't look up soon enough and rear-ended a vehicle. The gentleman got out and was mad and pulled his police badge out and said he was off duty and his 8 month old was in the back seat. Now luckily there was no damage anywhere but I realized how close I came to a very bad situation. This is why I believe that texting and driving is dangerous and unsafe. There are many other reasons why it is so unsafe to use a cellphone besides phone calls if its hands free. If your phone makes a noise we all know it's common nature and a habit to check it. If your friends send a text we feel we need to answer it at that very moment instead of waiting till its safe. Not only do we check texts but also we fill the need to check our emails, twitter, Facebook and many other interests we have. I'm sure we fail to realize the danger we have put every on in when doing this.

Over 1/3 of drivers (37%) have sent or received text messages while driving, and 18% said they do it regularly. The studies found that manual manipulation of phones, such as dialing and texting of the cell phone lead to a substantial increase in the risk of being involved in a safety-critical event (e.g., crash or near crash). Text messaging on a cell phone was associated
