The most criticized and shunned dog in the United States is the American Pit Bull Terrior. The pit bull breed has come under harsh scrutiny due to the violent nature of it's attacks. There are legislations trying to ban pit bulls altogether in the United States. Certain states have already began banning pit bulls such as Denver, Colorado. This is an ineffective and unfair way of handling this situation. A dog is only a product of its owner and they do what they are taught to do.
Pit bulls are very are a very misunderstood breed of dog. Although pit bull attacks are the highest of any breed of dog in the United States, when you compare that to the total number of pit bulls altoghether they are not the most likely to attack. There are over five million two hundred and sixty five thousand pit bulls in the United States. From 1979 to 1998 there were 66 fatal attacks on humans. This is only a .00125 pecent chance that a pit bull will fatally attack you. This is a small number in comparison to the chance that a rotweiler, german sheperd or even a chow will fatally attack you. There are about nine hundred thousand rotweillers total with 39 of those rotweilers fatally attacking a human between 1979 and 1998 making it a .00433 percent chance that you will be fatally attacked by one. German sheperds came out to a .00217 percent chance and chows came in at a .00333 percent chance. As you can see the pit bull is not the most likely to fatally attack you but yet they are still the most scrutinized. Naturally there will be more attacks from such a large number of one type of dog but if there were as many rottweilers, german sheperds or chows there number would be much higher in comparison to that of the pit bull.
Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, West Virginia. These are all states that have an active ban on pit bulls in one or more of their counties. This is a very unfair and inneffective way of handling the problem. Isn't America supposed to be the land of the free. There are alot more people that die from cigarettes and cars but they aren't banning those. States are blaming the breed for the problem when in fact it's the few bad owners of the over five million pit bulls in the United States that give them a bad name. Criminals are using their pit bulls to guard their drugs or traing them how to fight for money. These are the dogs that are attacking people. Not law abiding citizens such as myself who is raising the dog in a good loving home with alot of attention. The problem is that when they do ban the dogs all together the good people will turn their dog over as their told and the bad people won't. They weren't following the law before why would they now. The government needs to crack down on the people who are breaking the law and not use banning the pit bull as a cop out.
