The Empire State Building: 
FACTS:
The Empire State Building was one of the first sky scraper in New York.
It is one of the most recognizable structures in the world.
An U.S. national historic landmark, it is a symbol of New York since it was completed in 1931.
It is designed in the Art Deco style that was popular at this time. The Empire State Building rises 381m above the heart of Manhattan, making it one of the best spots to view the city.
The Empire State Building has two observation decks located on the 86th and 102nd floor. The observation decks are open 365 days a year and have been visited at least by 117 million people. One of the most notable features of the Empire State Building is its top portion. Besides housing a TV transmitter that reaches over 8 million homes, the top 30 floors of the Empire State Building
are often illuminated at night with seasonal colors; red, white and blue for July 4th, Blue and white for Hanukkah, red and white for Valentine′s Day, etc.
Today, the Empire State building has more to offer than just a spectacular view. There are also three restaurants, three coffee shops, several specialty boutiques, a post office and two banks located inside the building.
HISTORY:
It was built in a record time of only 18 months they used 60.000 tons of steel, enough to build a double trail road from New York to Baltimore. 5.600 kilometers telephoncable 100 kilometers of water pipes, 73 elevators, 11 kilometers elevator shaft
It opened on the 1 mai in 1931.
In the first years after the opening it was nearly empty because it was built in a very bad part of New York so it had the nick name the "Empty state building".
At a Saturday morning at the June in 1945 a war aircraft flew into the 79th floor. 14 people died.
It was 40 years the biggest sky scraper in the world. In 1973 the World Trade Center was built and the Empire state building wasn't the biggest anymore, but since the horrible terroract of the 11th 2001 september it is the biggest sky scraper in New York again.
Today there live 10.000 people and 20.000 to 25.000 people work in it every day.
It is one of the world's eight wonders (the only one built in the 20th century).
