The Environment Paper
Within the 20th century, we had amongst us some really great poets, authors, writers, and editors. Each individual had their own opinion, belief and custom ways. Contained by, their political, social, physical, and moral view.
For example, William Dean Howells (1837 - 1920) was an American author Nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters" A very busy man that wrote plays, became a journalist as well as a magazine editor, and a mentor. However Howells was a pro-realism He was against sentimentality in fiction. He proves this in the story "Editha". In the story, Editha Balcom loves her country, and wants George Gearson to fight in the Spanish-American war. Editha considers herself a patriot, and has fallen prey to the propaganda surrounding the Spanish-American war. At the end of the story, Editha is telling her story to anyone who wants to listen. She has not learned that her romanticizing of war is a dangerous thing. Howells uses the story to demonstrate that romanticism can be a dangerous thing, and that a romantic ideal of war causes people to get killed. This is his moral belief.
Another example is Mark Twain (1835-1910) he was a well-known American author. He often used prejudice as a building block for the plots of his stories. Twain even said, "The very ink in which history is written is merely fluid prejudice." There are many other instances in which Twain uses prejudice as a foundation for the entertainment of his writings. He proves this in the opening paragraph of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Twain states, "Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot." the entire plot is rooted on the theme intolerance between different societal groups. There for this was his social view.
There was also Bret Harte (1836-1902) he was a talented humorist who could take fairly routine story formulas and give them new vigor and settings. His background as a journalist gave him a brisk style and a special skill for describing people, their mannerisms, and dialogue." He briefly describes his moral views in the setting of "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" which is used as a forum to explore themes of tolerance and forgiveness, appearance and reality, and the ominous power of nature. An example of his pledge "'I'm proud to live in the service of the Lord, And I'm bound to die in His army." This is his Moral opinion since he used this quote in the story "The Outcast of Poker Flat" This story brought him national attention.
Jack London (1876-1916) He obtained a large fortune from his fictional story's alone. His "strength of utterance" is at its height in his stories, and they are carefully well-constructed." To build a fire"
