In this paper, I will discuss the field of dentistry. I will briefly describe the meaning of dentistry, talk about the education requirements and the different jobs you can have under the field of dentistry. Dentistry is the branch of medicine that is involved in the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and the adjacent and associated structures and their impact on the human body. Dentistry is widely considered necessary for complete overall health. The doctors that practice dentistry are called dentist. (Wikipedia.org) A dentist has the job of preventing and treating patient's teeth, gums and mouth. Other occupations under the dentistry field are orthodontist, oral surgeons and prosthodontists.

In our country, a dentist must finish a four year college and then go to a four year dental program at another college. Once completed, a person can qualify as a doctor of dental surgery (DDS) or as a doctor of dental medicine (DMD). Most dental school graduates go right to work in dental offices to build clients, skills and practice. In treating teeth and gums, the main goal of a dentist is to make sure his patients have clean and healthy teeth. A dentist helps patients keep up with their dental hygiene as well. When ones mouth area is infected or about to be, a dentist can detect what is causing the infection. It will take many years and lots of training and keeping up with treatments and cures to protect the teeth, gums and mouth. A dentist has an important role and is considered very important in the healthcare industry.

A regular dentist who has done regular training in a dental program will typically handle cleanings, crowns, fillings, root canals, teeth extractions and dentures. There are a lot of dental

schools in our area that offer cheap services to customers in return for allowing dental school students the chance to get practice. That process is a win-win for everyone especially those

people that do not have dental insurance. Many dental students take on training positions or interns with local dentist offices in their areas. Some start off as dental assistants. Either way, it is good because it gives them practice and the opportunity to shadow an experienced dentist. It also gives the trainee or new dentist the chance to build up a clientele.

The dentistry field can have more specialties than just a regular dentist. When you are in need of braces or a retainer, your dentist will refer you to an orthodontist. Orthodontist is the branch A dentist treats and prevents diseases of the teeth, gums and mouth. In order to become a dentist, hard work, long study hours and a desire to help others is required. The dentistry field requires a lot of qualifications that consist of about eight years of college and dental school. All dentist have to past several exams in the state they want to do dental work in order to become licensed. Other occupations under the field of dentistry includes an orthodontists, an oral or maxillofacial surgeon or a prosthodontists.
