Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, the author of The Great Gatsby, was born in1896 in St.Paul, Minnesota and named after his ancestor Francis Scott Key, the author of The Star-Spangle Banner. After attending the St. Paul Academy and the Newman School, Fitzgerald studied at Princeton University, where he focused on literary efforts. Then he had to leave Princeton, because of poor grades and The breakout of The First World War. In 1917,he left Princeton and joined the Army. The next year, While stationed at Camp Sheridan, he met Zelda Sayre at a dance . In 1919, he was discharged from the army and hired by an advertising firm .He and Zelda are engaged . Scott was not making his fortune enough ,and so Zelda breaks their engagement .However, his first novel, This side of Paradise ,was published in 1920. In addition, the novel positioned him as a key spokesman for what he called the "Jazz Age" of the 1920's .Zelda and Scott are married .In 1922, he finished his second novel, The Beautiful and Damned ,In 1925, Fitzgerald's masterpiece ,The Great Gatsby ,was published in April of 1925,it received good reviews ,but didn't sell well. In 1930,Zelda suffered the first of several nervous breakdown, but he continued to write, producing Tender is the night ,another commercial failure . Drunk, in debt, and with his wife in sanitariums, he moved alone to Hollywood in1937, writing screenplays in order to make a living. In Hollywood, he fell in love with movie columnist Sheilah Grahan. While working on an unfinished novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon, F. Scott Fitzgerald died of a heart attack at age of 44 in 1940.In the spring of 1922 Nick Carraway rents a house on Long Island Sound. Near by live Nick's cousin Daisy Buchanan and her rich ,burly ,unfaithful husband Tom, whose current mistress is Myrtle Wilson, the wife of a garage owner, George Wilson. Next door to Nick in an enormous mansion is Jay Gatsby ,rich but rootless as air. While visiting the Buchanans, Nick meets Jordan Baker ,a charming girl flawed by dishonesty, from her he learns that Gatsby ,a poor boy from the Midwest, had dreamed of attaining the wealth and been in love with Daisy . After being rich ,he hosts lavish parties to attract Daisy. Because of Nick's arrangement , Gatsby and Daisy rekindle their love due to his fortune. When Daisy learns his wealth comes from racketeering and asked to break up with Tom, she refuses Gatsby again. As they come back from New York, she drives the car and run down Myrtle ,Gatsby wants to protect her from her husband ,but Daisy and her husband conspire to let Gatsby take the responsibility. Mr. Wilson is told about the fake story that his wife has an affair with Gatsby, which is made up by Daisy and Tom and shoot Gatsby to death and then himself. Nick ,as a friend of Gatsby, hold a funeral for Gatsby, but no one come to it. Daisy doesn't give any call or response to his death.
