The importance of ethical and social responsible behavior
Nowadays our world is full of people that want to get rich and do it as fast as possible, neglecting everything in their way. Such an approach to business could get a person to getting the most of her business, but in the end the question remains – did it worth it? The world is not all about money and fame, but not everybody can understand that. There are countless things more important than money. This is why it is so important that business holders keep an ethical and social responsible behavior when running their businesses.
The world is the place where we all live in and it is important to keep it clean. Businesses certainly have a big role in doing this. Thus, many organizations nowadays go green, which means that they implement procedures to protect and preserve the natural environment. For example, Subway is reducing the use of paper, which saves 147,000 trees each year. Another way of showing care about the world’s environmental problems is through pursuing developed standards by the nongovernmental International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It gives a specific standard to pursue and most of the companies have to continuously develop and improve towards environmental performance.
Another point that we should talk about is ethical behavior. If we want to make the world a better place to live in, everybody must understand what is right and what is wrong. Of course we talk about ethics here. Companies worldwide are trying to make progress in this direction by: employee selection; ethics training; promoting positive social change; implementing different codes of ethics; providing a value-based management and so on… Organizations managers play an important role in ethics. They are responsible for developing an environment that will make employees pursue the culture and values of the organization, because most of the times people look towards the one that has power in the company and try acting like him. One very closely related to ethics fact is how the rewards and the appraisal system are allocated in a company. For example, when a manager praises a employee that used unethical behavior, but ultimately achieved success many other organization’s employees may think that success may serve as an excuse for unethical behavior, which is totally wrong.
In conclusion I would like to say that sometimes people should stop for a minute and realize that we all are part of something more important than our revenue decisions. It is about ethics and social responsibility behavior that shapes the business image and shows the world that the organization cares about something more than just money. Managers and the leaders of the organization can make a serious contribution to shaping a ethical behavior among employees. In addition this is why many of the biggest organizations on earth that achieved success and wealth are struggling to make the world a better place for us and for the future generations, which are our children. The message that should be spread worldwide is that together encouraging ethical behavior and social responsibility we can make a difference.
