The Queen, the royal family, the Crown Jewels and Buckingham Palace are some symbols of the Britiah Monarchy. The latter dates back to the 9th century, and at the turn of the 21st century one can wonder whether monarchy is really necessary and useful for Great Britain and the Commonwealth.
At first sight, the monarchy in Britain might seem unnecessary and out of fashioned, especially for people leaving in a republic such as France or the US or in some regions of the Commonwealth such as Quebec in Canada. The Royal Family has so little power that they are becoming useless. The Queen doesn't have a significant political power anymore. For instance, the Speech from the Throne is written by the Prime Minister, she only repeat what the Cabinet write . Moreover, the hereditary principle which is a foundation of a Monarchy may seem unfair today. Finally, the monarchy is very expensive to operate; several millions of pounds are spent every year and these resources might be reallocated to some more valuable uses.
However, I believe that monarchy is useful to Britain, the Crown is part of the British heritage, it's a piece of history which the Britons are proud of. Furthermore, monarchy is an element of stability and continuity; it's a solid and central point that Britain needs when times get hard. To a certain extent, the monarchy contributes to social unity. Finally, the queen represents the country and build relationships with many other countries.
To conclude, I think the Crown is useful, British people should be proud of their monarchy. However, I am also convinced that modernizing it might be beneficial.
