The narrator and his friend are two regular white persons. They are tired of being "wallpaper", the narrator says. He means that, they do not draw attention. They are wondering, how it would be, to live with attention. Then one day they decided to rent costumes, so they could get attention. As they walked, on their way to the market, they saw a police car slowly followed them. When they arrived to the market, they began walking through the market. While they were walking, young men punched and kicked them. When they had finished the market, they walked into a local center. People stopped, and starred at them. The longer they walked the more policemen and guards were following them. They heard the walkie-talkies say: "The suspects are in sight". They continued walking, and suddenly a woman shouted: "Everyone get back, they might have a bomb inside those costumes". They narrator and his friend just kept on walking. When they left the center, a car with young men drove by, and yelled at them. On their way home, they walked past a store, where a toy soldier looked up, and said: "You guys rock".

Characterise the language and narrative style

The language in the text is very different, compared to the usually text I read. I do not think, that it is a strange or poorly language, but it is just different. They way he introduces the story is a bit weird, you really have to focus a lot, to find out what he means. But the more you read, the more of the story you understand. In the story the narrator tells us, what is on his mind, but also suddenly ask himself questions. The narrator also has some flashbacks in the story. The reason why I think the story is different, is because he keeps changing between, telling us something that is happening, and then expressing to us what is on his mind.

Discuss why the narrator acts the way he does and why his surroundings act the way they do

The narrator is bored of being white, and having no attention at all. Then he decides to rent a costume, and walk through the city, to get attention. The narrator does not care about, what other people think of him, and he just keeps on walking.

It sounds to me like Seattle is a harsh city, because when he walks through the market, young men punches and kicks him, even though they have no reason to. The people on the street and the people in the center, stares at him, because they have not seen anything like it before. They might have seen people in costumes before, but in that case it would have been people, standing in a store, or people acting for children. This is just a regular person who is in a costume, acting normal. Doing the normal stuff a man would do. The police and guards follow him, because they might think he is up to something. And at last there is the toy soldier who is fascinated by him, and thinks that he has a cool costume.
