Mathilde Loisel changed over the ten years she worked to pay off the debt of replacing the necklace see accidently lost. She and her husband had to take on more work to pay the extraordinary debt they encountered. Mathilde worked as a maid in her own home. All her dreams of wanting to be waited on and becoming a wealthy noblewoman were forever forgotten the night she lost the necklace. . Mathilde Loisel changed from a middle class wife to a working class wife all because people were dishonest to one another. Had both parties been truthful from the beginning Mathilde's hardship might have been avoided.

Madame Foreister let Mathilde Loisel borrow her diamond necklace for the party she was going to attend. Mathilde Loisel promised to keep the necklace safe. The night of the party arrived and she was wore the dress she had bought with her husband's money. Mathilde Loisel was having a good time but soon it was 4 O'clock in the morning. She awoke her husband from the waiting room and he called for a cab. Mathilde Loisel checked if she had the necklace, which she did have. They both then got in the cab and hurried home from the party. When they arrived home from the party Madame Loisel noticed that the necklace wasn't on her neck. She exclaimed to her husband that the necklace was gone. He was shocked. He asked if she checked her dress and jacket. She said that she did and it wasn't there. He then called the cab company to ask if they had seen the necklace in the cab. They did not see it. . Mathilde Loisel lied to her friend Madame. She wanted to replace the necklace and she lied to Madame telling her the latch broke. Lying and not being truthful regarding the lost necklace changed the course of Mathilde's life over the next ten years.

Madame and her husband went through such elaborate lies and deception to hide the truth of the lost necklace that it cost them financially. Mathilde was never rich and she borrowed the necklace to appear rich. When she lost it and replaced it her life spiraled because she thought the necklace was worth so much. She was afraid to admit that she lost it and she dismissed their maid to keep costs down and they rented a barret under the roof. She then became the maid. Mathilde Loisel was doing all the hard work that only the working class did. Her natural beauty was what Mathilde had to offer in society. She was admired for her natural beauty. The loss of the necklace and the deception of the lies cost Mathilde her looks. Her life as a maid in her own home aged her and stole her beauty. Her husband took three jobs to pay off the financial debt from the lost necklace.

Ten years later Mathilde Loisel saw Madame Foreister in the market place with her child. She approached her friend. Her friend didn't know who Mathilde Loisel was anymore because she was old and different. Mathilde Loisel reintroduced herself to her friend. Madame was shocked at Mathilde's aged
