THE PRO OF LIFE

The "pro-life" view teaches that life already has value independent of our decisions. Many in the pro-life movement hold to the following presuppositions.

1- Life did not and does not come by accident.

2- The value of life remains constant

(the sanctity of life view).

3- Human life has value because God made us

in his image.

4- God determines right and wrong (absolutes).

1 No one comes by accident. God is sovereign over everything and has a purpose for everyone.

Humanists believe that conception can happen by accident such as when the birth control fails. It is certainly true that we have accidents. We fail, and we lose control, but God doesn't. God said, "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you (Jeremiah 1:5)." Even though our choices influence procreation, we are not alone. God is at work using our efforts, even our mistakes, for his purposes.

2 Theists cannot accept that humans must attain worth. If God makes a human being in his image, that image is a gift: not a goal for us to attain. The DNA of a newly conceived human zygote reflects the personality of an individual before that person develops through mental and emotional processes.

The image of God refers to the unique attributes that humans share with God. All of those attributes reflect the idea of personhood, so personhood is a given.

3 "God created man in his own image. In the image of God he created him; male and female he created them (Genesis 1:27)."

Theists do not believe that humans get value or purpose from themselves or from people around them or from nature. Human life is not evaluated by what we do but by who made us. We don't reflect God's image perfectly; we're finite and sinful, but being made in God's likeness is all that makes us valuable.

4 Pro-life people believe in a universal set standard of right and wrong. Christians in particular base their beliefs on a standard revealed to them in the Bible. Christians believe the Bible as God's word, and whatever comes from God must be true. They don't need to revise the Bible, because truth does not change.
