What's In a Step?

He steps on the field

To the fans, it is nothing more that the beginning of a game

And no one would ever really know what it meant, except him

Endless hours of drills,

Weight lifting,

Team meetings,

Pushing homework to the back burner

Pain--- oh the pain

Mental and physical

Driving him to reach deep within himself

Grasping on to a strength that only God can provide

Expectation

The ground beneath his feet turning

Yes, turning to water and carrying him to victory

He steps off the field

To the fans, it is nothing more that the end of a game

And no one will ever really know what it means, except him

I wrote my poem to focus on the character that is formed in playing sports and being an ultimate competitor. When an individual learns to push through trials and tribulations and give everything they have in a football game, I truly believe that their character will grow. My poem also sheds light on the fact that sometimes people will watch an athlete, or read someone's book and they will never know how
