Ind the book "The Scarlett Letter", there is a young woman named Hester Prynne. Hester Prynne is shamed and punished in public becaus she is pregnant and everyone thinks she has committed adultery. Everyone knows that it can't be her husband's because thery have been seperated for 2 years. The law enforcers and ministers make her wear a scarlett letter "A" on her dress to show that she has committed adultery.

Ther story actually starts when Hester is let out of prison and taken through the twon, showing her scarlett "A". All the while she is carrying her baby girl, Pearl with her. Pearl was born while Hester was in prison. Hester will not tell anybody the name of Pearl's father, so that he won't have to be shamed like she has been.

During the time that they are parading Hester through the town, her husband arrives. He had gone to see Hester in prison and asked her not to let anybody know that his was in town. He plans on disguising himself so he can go find Hester's lover and get revenge.

Hester's husband takes on the new name of Roge Chillingworth, who is a doctor. Hester promises to keep her husband's identity a secret. Roger soon finds out that the minister is the father of Hester's baby. Roger begins to haunt and torment the minister for the next 7 years.

Ther minister is eaten away by the guilt and can't confess his sin to the public. After the 7 years have gone by, Hester begins to realize the mean, evil things that her husband, Roger has done to the man she loves.

She tells Dimmesdale, the minister all about her husband's pland to get revenge on him. The two of them come up with a plan to leave Boston and go to England, to hide from her husband and start a new life together.

Dimmesdales's sin gets the better of him and he can't follow through with the plan. He confesses his sin to the people of his town on the stage that had been where 7 years earlier they had shamed Hester. His final dying act was when he ripped open his shirt to reveal the scarlett "A" he had carved into his chest. He finally finds sme peace from confessing his sins to the townspeople.

When Chillingworth dies a year after Dimmesdale, he leaves all of his property and money to Pearl. Hester and Peal move back to England. Hester lates returns to New England and resumes wearing the scarlett "A" on her own accord. Hester dies and is buried next to the Minister. Their gravestone said "ON a field sabel, the letter "A" gules."
