The Silent Invader Guam's Brown Tree Snake

The silent invader which is known as Guam's brown tree snake has become an invasive species around Micronesia and the Pacific. It has affected the ecology and the social wellbeing of the islanders. To my own knowledge and what I have seen on the video in class is that after World War II the brown Tree snake was accidentally transported from its native range in the South Pacific to Guam, probably as a stowaway in ship cargo from there and on the invasion of the cold blooded prey begun.

After almost sixty years the brown tree snake has accumulated and has been destructing the Island of Guam. The ecological is that the brown tree snake is a venomous organism and has been pitting people and young kids. The cold blooded has also been eating the birds and bats in the island and this also affects the food chain in the forest and disturbs other organisms. Another advantage for the animal is that it has no other predator. This provides it with a wide gateway for him to survive and also breed. Another very unpleasant effect of the brown tree snake is that it climbs up to electric wires which cause power outage. As a result the damages need to be repaired and that which cost a lot. With this dilemmas and plenty other more it has affected the tourism industry and also the economy of Guam. The snake has managed to climb up the food chain and has demolished the system in Guam.

This is why other islands in Micronesia and also the Pacific should protect their islands from the entry of this cold blooded predator. There are many doors in which the Brown tree snake can enter to other islands. First it can enter in a cargo by sea. The predator could easily hide between containers or in cars that are being transported to the island. Another entry is on cargo by plane which is also the same strategy to hide between containers other transported products. Another one is by military cargo which is also the same ways as the rest. These are mainly the primary entry areas in which the brown tree snake could enter by and invade other island.

There are ways in which we can counter the cold blooded predator. But the counter is mainly depended on the customs and the immigration officers. The officers should thoroughly check every inch of the cargo plane and the cargo ships. They should also set guidelines for the customers who send cargo to follow so they will be able keep track of the cargo and able to maintain in any situations. Even though the officers do their job right but still it is not enough to protect the island from this predator.

The islanders should work together to protect their islands. There are many in which to protect their homes from the snake. People who are invaded by this animal should protect their homes.

The first way to protect your homes from this predator is to have bright lights around the house. Another way is also
