"The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin and the short play "Trifles" by Susan Glaspell was ironic and contained symbolism, much so that it would make us, the readers, rethink the story and reanalyze it once or twice. As the plots developed, the reader can tell that the writer wants us to really understand their characters and these authors imagination led us to see their characters in a different light.
In "The Story of an Hour" the readers can reveal that Mrs.Mallard was informed that her husband died in a tragic accident. It is said that she is "young, with a fair calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength" this sentence gives the readers insight on Mrs.Mallards feelings and emotions towards her marriage. In contrast, Mrs.Wright in the short play "Trifles" has been in an abusive marriage and her freedom from her husband was guaranteed when she murdered her husband. Mrs.Wright is decribes as "Shabby" after "thirty years" with Mr.Wright and thins are no longer "cheerful" in the house, or in her life. When Mr.Wright decided to snap the neck of the bird, and silence it forever, Mrs.Wrights only happiness was over.
Mrs.Mallard had loved her husband at times, but never a strong commitment to the marriage as much as someone should have. She began to realize how her life was when Mr.Mallard was around, she felt trapped and unsafe, she was said to be under his "Powerful will". She reflects on her life, and how it was with Mr.Mallard to the way it would be without him; she feels "free, free, free". This symbolizes the fact that she is finding herself and has a new sense of freedom. Although, Mrs.Wright was not so fortunate, when she killed her husband, no one knew it was her until the Sheriffs wife unraveled every inch and every clue. The Sheriffs wife decided not the mention anything to her husband, thing is that when Mrs.Wright's secret gets out that she was the one who killed her husband, she would spend time behind bars. Knowingly, I am guaranteed that she indeed felt some sense of pride and freedom when she killed him the same way he killed her bird "Wring his neck".
