A major theme in The Shrew that has been appropriated in 10 Things is marriage. In 10 Things the whole concept of marriage has been appropriated into the idea of 'dating' as the film focuses on a younger generation and it portrays the changing values over four centuries. The Shrew associates marriage to be an economic institution and places great emphasis on the economic aspects of marriage, specifically how an economic consideration determines who marries whom. Due to this, marriage becomes a transfer of money, as shown in Baptista's decision for Bianca's husband,

'I must confess your offer is best...

Though this was about 400 years ago when marriage was essential, in this day and age marriage isn't as necessary; there are plenty of women even older then Katherine that are single and the values of a contemporary society are seen in the 10 things I hate about you because while Kat and sister Bianca are in a similar position, it is only because Kat is one of the few girls single at her surbrun highschool, and like in the play, the younger Bianca cant have a boyfriend until Kat does. The problem is, is that Kat is an outcast at her school with one friend (also an outcast) and the boys aren't exactly lining up, she is very different to the beautiful, materialistic Bianca and her friends.
