There are many shocking parts in the story "To be a Slave" but the most shocking ones are that the slaves were dragged miles just to be sold at the sea ports, that babies were thrown over board because they weren't able to work, and lastly that one-fourth the people that went on board didn't make it across to America. Slavery causes devastation in the world, caused millions to die, and thousands to lose their families.First off, slaves were dragged over 200 miles to just be sold. Everyone should find that this is completely immoral and wrong. Slaves had to walk in chains on their hands and legs. Also, the males had to be chained to other males with a rope around the neck. Also they had to wade through rivers and get on to boats to go down river, because every river goes down to a bigger body of water. Secondly, babies were thrown overboard because they were unable to work the fields and that is all the whites wanted them for. The mothers of these babies tried to save their children lives by jumping in after them. Also many other parents broke their own arms, shoulders, or any other limbs they could then be sent to be forced as a slave. Lastly, 1/4 the people in total that went on a trade ship died over seas. Also, if anyone got sick or died they were thrown overboard for the sharks. The sharks actually followed the ships because of all the deaths on board. With all the people that tried to commit suicide than rather become slaves. Nonetheless, slavery is a very devastating thing that no human being should ever wish upon another. It has killed thousands and separate them from their families. Also, they have been forced to work for years in the cotton farms or other things. Slavery ruins lives, families, and devastated whole communities.
