To Kill A MockingBird Essay

It is a sin to kill a mockingbird because mockingbirds don’t harm anyone because all they do is “sing their hearts out for us” just like Miss Maudie said in Chapter 10 and two characters that can resemble this is Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. Although a mockingbird is an animal two very important characters in the novel can be looked at as a symbol of a mockingbird. With Boo Radleys generosity and compassion he can be looked at as mockingbird in a few different ways. Also there is Tom Robinson, a black male who despite how everyone looks at him chooses tries defy what they think.

First, it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because a mockingbird does no harm to anyone or anything, and to kill it would be wrong and out of spite. On page 90 Miss Maudie said, “Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy.” This quote meaning that mockingbirds have this innocence, and to rob them of that innocence is wrong and sinful. Its sinful to kill a mockingbird because it does not do one thing to harm anyone or anything, because all it does is sing. Also on page 90 Atticus tells Jem and Scout “Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it is a sin to kill a mockingbird." Without explaining anything you know from what Atticus said that it is not a sin to kill a blue jay or any other bird, but it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. It may be wrong to kill a blue jay but it is not a sin like killing a mockingbird would be. So the fact that mockingbirds are harmful and innocent creatures is what makes it a sin to kill them.

A character that can resemble the innocence of a mockingbird is Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson resembles a mockingbird because he was very vulnerable for being blamed in situations because he was black however he never did anything wrong . There was sinful news told that Tom Robinson had been killed, “They shot him” (page 235) Calpurnia had said “ Seventeen bullet holes in him. They didn’t have to shoot him that much.”Killing a mockingbird would be a sin so killing one who resembles a mockingbird should be a sin as well, however since he was black and a prisoner it was not. Also Tom was trying to escape from prison because he was going to be executed for nothing, and the people of Maycomb knew that as well yet he was still proven guilty. Also on page 186 it says that “[Tom Robinson's] arm was fully 12 inches shorter than his right and hung dead at his side. It ended in a small shriveled hand, and as far away as the balcony I could see that it was no use to him.” The jury was trying to prove Tom guilty of a crime that was physically impossible for him to commit. Just like a mockingbird Tom meant no harm to anybody and was only trying to help Mayella (the girl he was accused of raping) because he felt bad for her situation. But the verdict was that he was guilty and killed regardless of
