1. Use the model in exhibit 1 as a guide and assess the ethical and
social responsibility implications of the situation described.
Sorry, my copy of the book is so bad that I could not read anything
from Exhibit 1.
2. Can you recommend alternative strategies or solutions to the
dilemmas confronting the tobacco companies? To governments? What is
the price of ethical behavior?
I really do not have any alternative strategies or solutions to the
dilemmas confronting the tobacco companies. As I read the case, the
suggested recommendations for multinationals that Laczniak and Naor
mention seem plausible.
Not that I care about how much tobacco companies make. A thing I would
like to mention is the "smuggling" that not only affect market shares
and damage the reputation and profitability of brand, but especially
where the low quality counterfeit products are concerned, which they
pose a serious risk on the most important, to the consumer
Everything boils down to a "right" or "wrong" like the case
mentions. Is it ethical or socially responsible for the parties
involved? Companies may argue that the smoker would consume tobacco
either from U.S. companies or from others. But in the case of
government it amazes me to find out that "Giving the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to regulate tobacco products.
Tobacco products are virtually the only consumer products available
that are not regulated by the federal government." (http://
www.lungusa.org). Can a government like China suppress the huge
revenues from the China National Tobacco Company, when it represents
the government's biggest source of funding and also a major import
commodity? I
