One of the basics of article marketing research is identifying the target market. However what does that mean exactly?

If you are a beginning marketers you might not have the background to know the jargon. Until recently, it was used mostly by advertising agencies. Things have changed.

Small businesses, those traditional businesses up and down Main Street as well as those that are Internet-based and in the just getting started phase, don't always have the budget to hire an advertising agency. Their money is better spent on other things, so they opt for a do-it-yourself approach.

While an advertising agent might disagree, the do-it-yourself approach can be successful.

There are many successful self-taught marketers among today's successful business owners. One of the first things they needed to learn about was the target market.

A target market is simply a group of people that would be interested in the products a company has to sell. In some cases, there are several target markets. On the other hand, there are few products that appeal to all people everywhere.

In order to identify your company's target market, you could use demographics. Demographics are characteristics of various populations. If you were trying to choose whether or not to advertise on another website, you might look at the demographics of the people who frequently visit the site.

In an articles marketing strategy, demographics are used to customize the articles according to who the reader is expected to be. For example, the people who might read this article from beginning to end are fresh marketers.

Some of the characteristics used in demographic data include sex, age, race and income. For product sales, characteristics like lifestyle, hobbies, career or special interests might be used. Certain products might appeal to specific cultures.

To identify a target market for a product, you start by writing down who would desire to buy it. You start with the most basic information and narrow it down until you have found a niche: a small, demographically related group.

There are several ways to use this information in an articles marketing strategy. As previously mentioned, you can use the information to help you identify with your readers. You feel as though you know who you are writing to.

The demographic information will also help you choose where to publish your articles and where to post links that lead to your articles. Forums, discussion boards and social networks are often used for link-building.

Link-building is another topic with which you may be unfamiliar. You can learn more about that also, however for immediately, focus your article marketing research on identifying your niche or niches. It will make the rest of the process simpler.
