The assignment asks you to do internet research on the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and answer particular questions at the end of Lesson 5. Make sure to specifically state whether you think the Study was ethical or unethical and why. Either "I believe the study is ethical because ____" or "I believe the study is unethical because _____." In the blank, specifically identify what parts of the study support your decision.

Note also that the instructions say the length needs to be 150 to 200 words. Assuming all of the answers are correct, if your essay is only 150 words, the best grade you can make is an 70%. 200 words or more (and correct answers) earns a 100%.

When doing internet research, first you must list the exact web address - www.msn.encarta/syph/Tuskegee.com This link doesn't work! It is just to show you how to cite an address - as opposed to listing just "encarta.com" or "Wikipedia" - which you wouldn't do. You will need to do your own search! Second, you CANNOT simply cut and paste the information from the web. You must put the information into your own words (paraphrase).

Here is an original paragraph:

The study involved 600 black men--399 with syphilis and 201 who did not have the disease. Researchers told the men they were being treated for "bad blood," a local term used to describe several ailments, including syphilis, anemia, and fatigue. In truth, they did not receive the proper treatment needed to cure their illness. In exchange for taking part in the study, the men received free medical exams, free meals, and burial insurance. Although originally projected to last 6 months, the study actually went on for 40 years.
