Ukraine has a long history. Its roots go back to the early time of our centuries. At those times Ukraine was called Kievan Rus. The state Kievaan Rus was set up in the 9th century . It was a poverful state with highly developed culture and laws.The state was headed by princes. The most famous princes were Volodymyr and Yaroslaw called " Wise" for his care for culture and education.

The name Ukraine was mentioned for the first time in 1113 in Kiev Cronicle.

The fertile soil of Ukraine , the rich reserves of forest, metal, coal, its hard- working people of the country attracted many enemies. Many countries , the neighbours of Ukraine tried to conquer our country and they often had success.

From the 13th century Ukraine suffered from Golden Horde, Lithuanian, Romanian, Turkish and Austro-Hungarian invaders.

In 1648 in the history of Ukraine appeared B. Khmelnytskyj. He headed the cossack army and soon became the hetman of Ukraine.

In 1654 a document between Ukraine and Russia Tsar was signed .It was a Union between Ukraine and Russia.

The first president of Ukraine was M. Grushevskyj. He was also a great historian . In 1898 he published his book " History of Ukraine-Rus". He was one of the outstanding man in Ukrainian history.

The history of Ukraine is glorious and tragic . For centuries Ukrainian people had been struggling for liberty and independence. At last on the 24th of August in 1991 Verhovna Rada of Ukraine announced the formation of an independent Ukrainian State, and in December 1991, A nation-wide referendum confirmed the wish of Ukrainian people for independence. Since we are a sovereign state nation with our own language, traditions, culture and mode of life.
