The development of cultural competency for managers and professionals in healthcare continues to evolve and is a vital component for success in providing unbiased and quality care to clients from all cultures and diverse backgrounds. With the growth of such a diverse population, the need for a multicultural work environment is essential for growth and development of any business. Cross et al. (as cited by Diller, 2007) noted the need for an ongoing process that allows for the development of cultural competence in which individuals and agencies strive to obtain, foster and evaluate newly acquired knowledge of clients from diverse backgrounds.

Understanding Cultural Differences in the Business Setting

Ethnocentrism is an individual's beliefs of another person's gender, ethnic and cultural background differences, as it relates to their own culture. The importance of recognizing these differences is the key for professional growth towards cultural competency. How one handles their own ethnocentric behavior in society, can be the difference between acceptance and discrimination towards those with different cultural backgrounds.

Diller (2007) noted "A first step toward cultural competence involves developing an awareness of the ways in which cultures differ and realizing that these differences affect the helping process" (p.15). Relationships are built on trust and respect for one another and having a personal awareness of one's own reactions, preferences and feelings will have an impact on the type of relationship that develops. With this recognition, one has the ability to alter their attitudes and see value of the cultures as they coexist (Diller, 2007).

People with different cultural backgrounds, usually have different approaches for problem solving. This can potentiate misunderstandings when attempting to deal with a client on a particular issue or concern. Taking the time to seek out knowledge and skills that help one develop sensitivity towards a client's culture, helps to establishes respect, acceptance and lessens the opportunity for conflict to occur. "Providers, as professionals, are expected to demonstrate expertise and competence in the services they offer" (Diller, 2007, p. 2). This allows one to maintain their self-esteem, leads to empowerment of the individual and levels the playing field for all involved. By remaining flexible and respectful of an individual's view points, one's approach to providing the appropriate health care will serve
