Australia first became concerned in the Vietnam disagreement in 1962 when the Australian administration sent a team of 30 military advisers to help out train the South Vietnamese military intended for its fights against the NLF guerrillas. At the matching time a regiment of regal Australian atmosphere power armed forces was sent in the direction of Thailand.

While the alliance with the USA was becoming increasingly important, Australia still had strong ties with Britain. In January 1965, Australia sent an army battalion to help Britain defend newly independent Malaysia against border raids by Indonesia. Only three months later the Australian prime minster Menzies announced the commitment of another battalion to help the USA in South Vietnam.

The entrance of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) in South Vietnam throughout July and August 1962 was the start of Australia's participation in the Vietnam War. Australia became involved in the Vietnam War because Australia felt exposed by the extension of communism. Various people inside Australia believed that if South Vietnam became a communist country, extra countries would soon follow. Some Australians saw what was experience in Vietnam as a threat to Australia's security.

Australia's military participation in the Vietnam War was the longest in period of any war in Australia's times past.

Australia's doubts of communism were for all time there, because it is the only European established country in Asian region. This fear of communism had first allows to a sequence of cruel migration policies such as the "white Australia policy" it as well led to the belief in the "domino theory" which was that if we allowed communism to carry on in the south-east Asian countries, it would almost immediately take more than each slight nation one by one like falling dominoes. This hypothesis was practical to Vietnam with a number of people believing that if we did not stop communism there, it would soon extend all nearby countries including Australia. The domino theory was one of the reasons of Australia's commitment to the Vietnam War.
