WD-40 Distribution Model
WD-40's distribution model is to reach the "doers" and "on-the-job" users who are looking for simple and efficient solutions. WD-40 is sold at more than 5,000 retail distribution locations in the United States alone, and sells to a variety of industries and other industrial professionals. The three markets that WD-40 attempts to reach are industrial professionals, trade professionals, and home doers. The trade professionals include farmers, mechanics, construction works, plumbers, and other professionals who need to have easy-to-use product that is reliable. It is this base of users that don't acquire the product at the retail locations, but at a distributor level or "Pro Outlet" location. These trade professionals use the WD-40 product family, including 3-in-1 oil, WD-40, and WD-40 specialist products.
Home users of WD-40, or those are the "doers" that WD-40 try to reach, have access to WD-40's family of products through retail stores such as Wal-Mart and Home Depot in the United States. The home doers that WD-40 markets to are the "doer enthusiasts," or those who use the WD-40 family of products to treat their rust and squeak issues as well as improve their existing home products. These users will use the WD-40 base product, WD-40 Specialist products, and 3-on-1 oil. There are also products specifically for home use, including specific cleaning solutions and other items. The other home users that WD-40 reaches are the "occasional doers" are those who simply wish to maintain their home and existing home assets, including their automobiles and hobbies.
Industrial users of WD-40 are those who work in industrial maintenance, repair, and overhaul. They use the WD-40 family of products for specific applications based on their specific knowledge, but are not the ones who purchase the product. This is done by central buyers or facility managers from WD-40 distributors and other pro outlet locations. These professionals have access to WD-40's products that are meant specifically for those in industry; the WD-40 "Blue Works" family. This family of products is designed to deliver industrial grade quality that surpasses industry standards with superior performance.
