In this essay I will be explaining "what is hypnosis" by looking through various

literature sources, internet sources and by using my own knowledge from in class and what I have learnt and speaking with friends. I will include a brief history of hypnosis to support this. I will then go on to describe the psychological and physical aspects of hypnosis, followed by discussing the role of relaxation in Hypnotherapy.

Hypnosis is a state of mind achieved using a set of techniques. The hypnotic state is natural for all human beings. Trance is the state that is achieved from the technique.

Hypnosis enhances an individual's concentration which increases their responsiveness to suggestion. This is due to when being in a hypnotic state the subconscious is the one that is more responsive to suggestion than when you are in a fully conscious state. The suggestion will travel directly to the subconscious where it will help the individual to make the necessary changes in their thought patterns, behaviours or physiological state.

Hypnosis is a technique that can enhance people's lives in many ways and has huge benefits in modern life where everything has become so stressful and busy.

Hypnosis allows an individual to experience a special psychological state with certain physiological attributes. It resembles sleep only superficially. The individual who is engaging with hypnosis is always at a level of awareness other than the ordinary conscious state.

One theory suggests that hypnosis is mental, while another theory links hypnosis and says that it is an imaginative role of enactment.

People under hypnosis are said to have heightened focus and concentration with the ability to concentrate intensely on a specific thought or memory that's locked in their subconscious, while minimizing sources of distraction in their conscience.

Hypnosis is usually induced by a procedure known as a hypnotic induction involving a series of preliminary instructions and suggestions. The hypnotic suggestions may be delivered by a hypnotist in the presence of the client, or may be self-administered ("self-suggestion" or "autosuggestion").
