What Photography Field is Right for you?
One thing a great deal of people all over the world love to do is capture memories. The easiest
way to do this is by taking photos. Photos are a great way for us to relish the memories of important
milestones in our life. While photography can be a very fun hobby, it also can be a very exciting career!
Not many people consider going into the field of photography. However, one can enter into an exciting
field. Whether it is wedding, portrait, or event photography, there is a field for everyone!
Wedding photography is the most popular field of photography. This field is very appealing for
many reasons. The main one is money. Wedding photography is expensive and people will always pay
for photos of their very special day. However, just because it is popular does not mean it is easy. This
field of photography is a field that takes much consideration. "Wedding photography involves artistic
talent, human sense, complete mastery of photographic techniques, business knowledge, and a strong
desire to learn and deliver the best to the wedding couple" Says Juan Carlos Torres in an article on how
to become a successful wedding photographer. (Torres) This article stresses the importance of knowing
how to do more than just operate a camera. Some tips he offers are capturing priceless moments, being
a unique photographer with your own vision, and joining photography organizations that offer seminars
and workshops. Torres also talks about knowing how to do business well and being able to work with
Photoshop to make your pictures the best they can be. (Torres) There are many new things you can
learn every day and being open-minded can only help you in the wedding photography business. This
field has its rewards, but is not an entry-level field.
Photojournalism is also another very popular field of photography. This field can be very
exciting, especially if you live in a city where there is always a news story waiting to be captured. Most
photojournalists are freelance, which means they are their own boss. While this is something people
view as a great option, it also means unsteady income. Chris Jackson, a photographer at Getty Images
worked for almost nine months free before he was actually hired into the company. "Because you do
your nine to five working in sales or whatever, then you spend your evenings and weekends working for
nothing. You have to love what you do and have staying power" says Jackson. (Dight) Therefore, if
money is something you are after this field is not for you.
Fashion photography is another fast growing field. We see it everywhere in our everyday life,
