Why Does This Generation Not Know About Love?

Why does this generation not know about love?
Red party cups replace tea,
Bass music replaces silence under the stars,
Sex replaces making love. And this generation,
Replaces love with passion.
Love cannot exist without passion, but passion?
That can stand alone, in all its transgression, without love.
Why does this generation not know about love?
Why has the backseat of cars and broken down motels
Replaced married couple's beds and rose petals?
And when a soft, inviting mattress is involved,
Why is half of it almost always empty in the morning?
"I love you" is used as common as "do your homework" is
In a middle-school child's home.
As common as "how much" is used on street corners
In downtown Las Vegas.
This generation has no idea about love.
So what about tomorrow? Next year? Ten years form now?
What will come of love? Will my kids know of it?
Or will it be rumored and whispered in ally-ways
And reported as myth in history books?
I know what passion is.
I'm 18 and I can make a mean peppermint martini.
I smoke red, in the Marlboro sense,
And I live for that buzz at the bottom of the cup.
But why does love escape my mind?
Why does this generation not know about love?
I can answer that. It is because the last generation did not tell them.
So c'mon guys, what is love?
And why didn't you tell us about it?
Oh, you don't know what love is either?
This Was Our Empty Night.
