Why Vampires?

Then what makes us humans be so drawn into them?

The thing is that nowadays vampires are part of our world, not an eruption into it of an alien horror. The focus is no longer on their supernatural nature or the supernatural nature of blood itself but on their social relationship with human beings.

This isn't really a recent phenomenon. The supernatural has always held a very strong appeal for the human imagination--it's been going on for centuries. The difference is that now, supernatural characters are often viewed sympathetically. What used to be portrayed as pure evil is often given a more human perspective. I really think that most people feel a draw to be a part of something bigger than they are... something more than just ordinary. Whether a person relates to the vampire or the one hunting/ fighting the creature, it gives rise to the extraordinary. Vampires are popular because the idea of them is almost magical. All the books and movies on them show vampires as amazing creatures, and people aspire to be like the characters they read or hear about. Vampires are not real but that does not stop people from hoping that they are. Vampires are like fairy tales and people wish that fairy tales were true. They are unique and different, and that intrigues the masses. Vampires have been around for a very long time; it is believed that this is because in order for a supernatural concept to last there has to be something natural about it. Vampires are like people. This permits humans to draw inferences about how vampires might think and act. At the same time, supernatural concepts violate features of their natural category. Vampires are like humans, but unlike humans, they are dead and drink blood. These aspects make vampires both appealing and disgusting to the human mind.

Vampires live Forever: Death has always been one of the biggest fears people tend to suffer from. Therefore, the idea that a specie that looks exactly as any other human being has the ability to live forever is evidently very appealing to humans nowadays. Death is very difficult for us because we cannot easily process the idea that a person no longer exists. Vampires activate disgust in our minds because we are afraid they may contaminate us, yet we are drawn to them because they embody the idea that the soul can continue to exist after death.
