William Shakespeare's, Hamlet is considered to be one of history's most famous tragedy masterpieces. Shakespeare has been as history's most known playwright, known for his diversified use of images which help accentuate his brilliant use of language and the complexity of his literature. His use of vivid figurative language arouses senses and emotions of the reader. Harold Bloom once said, "Hamlet is deaths ambassador to us (Hamlet and the Order of Mortality-150)." Throughout the play Shakespeare depicts the natural imagery of decease, deterioration, and corruption. In the tragic tale, Hamlet Shakespeare uses nature imagery in order to emphasize the theme of fate, decay and corruption in Denmark's society being the foremost reason behind human incentives, existence and the flaws in mankind.
Shakespeare's use of nature imagery emphasise the theme of corruption and embellishes how the freely the ailment proliferates due to human nature, and ambitions. Corruption is accentuated when Marcellus while debating with Horatio wheatear or not to follow Hamlet and the ghost of old Hamlet in the dark night articulates: "something is rotten in the state of Denmark. (1.4.90)" These legendary words, which are expressed by Marcellus portray that no doubt that something is erroneous. The effect of his words shows the fear and apprehension created by the wandering ghost. When investigating deeper into Marcellus' remark, it becomes clear that the "something" is King Claudius (Hamlet and the Order of Mortality-170). This portrays that the unsuspected reader is yet to find the leading cause of corruption. Furthermore the ghost is seen as the perceptible symbol of corruption in the state of Denmark. The image of something rotting is a transparent evidence of Claudius corruption, as later it is discovered that Claudius due to his greed for supremacy and authority makes him viciously slaughters his own brother. The corruption of love in the pure relationship of brotherhood is then followed by the corruption of the nation itself. The corruption of the new king is seen to be multiplying towards those of his kingdom as well. Claudius's first action of killing Old Hamlet represents how tainted he is and represents how he is deceitful to the members of his own kingdom because the start of his thrown was because of his despoiled sinful act. Additionally the imagery of "something rotten" represents the decaying of authentic and virtuous state of Denmark which was there when Old Hamlet was alive. The decaying of a noble nation is now lead by a corrupted king who likes himself is corrupting his nation. Something rotting in the state therefore represents how human nature not only corrupts one but leads to the destruction of a whole entire nation.
