The human body consists of almost 70% water and everyone needs water in order to live. Clean and safe drinking water is a necessity for it prevents the transmission of waterborne diseases such diarrheal diseases, e. coli, dysentery, typhoid, cholera, dysentery, hepatitis or even death. Not only is bacteria a problem when considering drinking water but also pollutants such as pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and other toxic and hazardous materials.
All sources of drinking water, which includes city water systems, wells, lakes, rivers contain some level of contamination. These range from natural minerals, chemicals and by-products, to biological agents such as bacteria, viruses, and cysts. These contaminations come from industrial pollutants and poor sanitation and a study done by United States Agency International Development (USAID) shows that only 72% of Filipinos have access to improved sanitation .
Drinking water is defined by the Philippine National Standards For Drinking Water set by the Department of Health as "water intended for direct human consumption or use in food preparation ". They also stated "Drinking-water supplies should be free from contamination by human and animal excreta, which can contain a variety of microbial contaminants. Microbiological parameters are indices of potential waterborne diseases and, in general, are limited to bacteria, viruses and pathogenic protozoa ".
For impoverished countries like the Philippines, where there is a lack of infrastructure for water (such as plumbing and water treatment facilities) having a cheap and readily available water filtration system is very important because it does not only impact Filipinos health but also their economic welfare as well.
