ADVERBS OF TIME

Adverbs of time tell us when an action takes place.

Example: Tom was running after the ball. Finally he caught it. Then he slipped and fell. Soon the doctor arrived. Later he took an X-ray.

All the underlined words are adverbs of time because they tell us when an action took place.

When did he catch it? Finally

When did he slip? Then

When did the doctor arrive? Soon

When did he take an X-ray? Later

ADVERBS OF PLACE

Adverbs of place tell us where an action takes place.

Example: 1. Bill is climbing up the hill.

(Where is Bill climbing? Up)

2. The naughty boy hid inside the cupboard..

(Where did naughty boy hide? Inside)

Some other adverbs of place are: here, there, everywhere, nearby, out, down, across away.

Exercise 1

Underline the adverbs of time in the following sentences.

I think I have met you before.

I read the newspaper daily.

Maria has already spoken to me about the picnic.

Harry never shared any toy with his friend.

So his friends played happily without him.

Then Harry realized how selfish he had been.

Finally he gave one of his best racing cars to bill.

Now they are on good terms again.
