In today's business world, the type of leadership your company has is very important. A company thrives on the way they are working and if the type of the leadership they have is successful. There are so many competitors out there, and you want to make sure that your company stays at the top, only the strong survive. Servant leadership and competency-based leadership are two leaderships that are different from the original type of leadership. Servant Leadership is to serve others before serving yourself and competency-based leadership deals with leadership skills and behaviors that contribute to superior performance.

Like all leadership styles, servant leaderships have strengths and weaknesses, but what you do with it will determine the leadership your company has. A servant leader are servants first and leaders later. The major strengths of servant leadership theory are its contribution to organizational development. Traditional leaderships are all about aggressive upper management and telling them what to do and when but when it comes to servant leadership it allows the employees to act and perform the way they want. They work better when they don't have some nagging at them and looking down at them all the time. Such inspiration leads to collective efforts, the results of which turn out to be more than the sum of individual efforts. Also servant leadership offers loyalty, involvement, productivity and diversity. Leaders who use this leadership style earn respect from everyone because they see that it is a positive environment to work at. On the down side the weakness of having a servant leadership approach is that people can see it as a soft approach. If you are always listening and empathizing with your employees than sometimes you can steer in the wrong direction. People might say how you can lead when you are serving first. I think if you use servant leadership wisely, than it can be a huge success for your company and you. Another leadership style that has its strengths and weaknesses is competency-based approach. The strengths of competency-based leadership Is that they try to figure out the competencies that lead to an effective leadership. They find more than one way to lead a company and they won't stop till they find the best way. A weakness of the leadership style can be that they might have too much on their plate to handle. Competency-based leadership is all about finding the right skills and knowledge for the right leader to handle. Sometimes when you are trying to rush through things, you settle. An organization that relies solely on the firm competencies of its leaders may remain stable and reliable but often misses opportunities for growth and additional profits. Sometimes you need to step outside of the box and think differently. Also another weakness could be that relying on skilled workers only, it can lead to people not liking one another because everyone is the best and wants to be the best.
