Animal testing is the beauty industries ugly secret. Revlon among many other cosmetic companies participate in the inhumane act of testing products on animals. Animal testing includes tests where chemicals are rubbed onto shaved skin or dripped into the eyes of rabbits to examine skin or eye irritation. In this advertisement Revlon is promoting their new lipstick. The advertisement portrays the lipstick having a substantial formula, which is infused with vitamins and silk to be conditioning for the lips. However the reality is in order to develop new formulas the ingredients must be extensively tested for safety. This is where the problem lies, as animals become the victims of cruelty.
In this ad, flawless, glowing and healthy looking skin is being used to help promote the lipstick. This is ironic as the animals that are being tested on with these products are left anything but flawless. The problem relates to false advertising as Revlon does not display the truth behind how they formulate their products. For almost two decades they led their consumers to believe that they do not test on animals. They were recently exposed to not only participating in animal testing but shipping their products off to foreign countries to get the job done. This further proves how companies will keep things hidden from their consumers.
Animal rights theorist best represent our plans to subvert the message. They tend to disapprove and create judgment to any issue that concerns to cruelty of animals. These theorists influence people in society that animals deserve to have basic rights and that they are more than just commodities or used for materialistic ways. The general agreements with the animal rights activists are to educate the public through different advertisements and foundations in which motivates the individuals for their own participation and assistance in the abuse and exploitation. This helps create both a political and social issue which can slowly diminish if these messages are exposed to the public. Examples of this being shown is through acting upon these negative actions; joining the community, Volunteering at animal rights groups. You can also educate the public by showing different presentations to local schools or events as well as with the use of social media. This can be done by showing different clips about the process and your personal opinions. Through these ways, we can help change the perceptions of people, educate them on the misleading messages of cosmetics and expose the cruelty in hopes for it to end.
