English - first spoken in England - is now the most widely used language in the world. It is spoken as a first language in multiple countries including United kingdom the United States and Australia. It is also an official language of fifty three countries. On the other hand, Hindi is an official language of india. With about 497 million native speakers, Hindi is the third most spoken language of the world.

Hindi is a symbol of unity in diversity of India. With 23 official languages and more than 600 dialects, Hindi is one common language that everyone knows that connects most of the citizens to each other. Apart from that hindi is a direct descendant of sanskrit so it also binds the modern India to the ancient world (as most of the ancient text was in sanskrit). Despite of these facts, hindi is losing its importance, a foreign language, English has the same level of importance today in our country as hindi. Each and every Indian wants to learn the European language.

English came to India with the British rulers. With their prosperity on the Indian soil, their language, English also prospered. Since the British left Indian decades ago, their language should have also left the country. On the contrary, we regard it as an official language and it is very close in becoming a primary language. Today, even in a middle- class family, a child is put in a english medium school as it is thought that the child can learn fairly good hindi by conversing in hindi with his family, but the reverse doesn't hold true. These are just thoughts and not true; learning the primary language is much more important than learning a foreign language - English. Even in media, wether it is print or electronic, hindi is more widely used as more citizens understand it well. Hindi is also important to communicate to the citizens who live in different parts in the county and have a different mother tongue. Knowing the national language is specially more important as it keeps you rooted to your culture. So, why is English treated so greatly in our country?

Treating English the way it is being done has a direct impact on the modern generation, who are forgetting their own origin and culture, and trying to follow the western trend. Late night parties, which were never there in our culture, today has become a part of almost each and every urban citizen. The youth does not respect their elders, the families have started to live separately and thus have lost contact with their relatives. Not only this even the dressing style now-a-days is an influence of the western culture. The slangs that are being used in Bollywood is a direct reflection on the effect of using the western language. Hence, the language is having deep impact on the nation, the loss of identity is clearly visible. We should learn a few lessons from our neighbor country, China who have kept the integrity of there national language and payed less attention to learning English, and preserved
