Bride Wealth
Essay by people • March 22, 2012 • Essay • 405 Words (2 Pages) • 1,356 Views
Bride wealth is wealth, often in the form of livestock that is transferred from the groom's family to the bride's family to legitimize a marriage and the children. (Nowak, B. & Laird, P. 2010#. I think that this makes for a stringer and stable marriage due to the fact if a divorce occurs, the bride wealth would have to be returned, and since it is mainly paid in livestock and it would have already been distributed to the bride's kin. At this point other kin would do whatever it takes to not have the marriage dissolve or fail. I think at times in current North American societies, there is pressure to stay in a marriage because of the kids and even sometimes financial reasons. At the same time divorce is so common these days and so people just take the easy way out and get divorced instead of working on the problems they may have. I believe the factors that contribute to a stable marriage in America today is pure honesty and love. If you love one another and are honest with each other the marriage can last a lifetime.
