MINING COMPANY AND CASE AGAINST CSR:

1. BUSINESS IS BUSINESS...

2. BUSINEss plays by its own rules:

Business "bluffing" - we know that business rules differ from personal/societal rules....ie we cannot apply the same set of (Personal) standards to business - this would simply be unfair!

Mining company:

Mining company is expected to minimize costs - so for example, they should not be expected to look after the welfare of the local village - they built low cost housing - this is the rule of business - minimze your costs.

Negotiation with the leader of the village?: their job/their rule is to negotiate successfully to gain the land. They are expected to take advantage of an opportunity. "find the hidden treasure".

3. business should not dictate morality.

Management/business is not equipped to deal with social issues. We cannot expect business to manage social agendas - e.g., which country to deal with? Social issues do arise in business but this is to be addressed by the govenmnent. For example: government regulates/controls areas that border on social issues.

Ie the mining compnaues, as we said earlier, are not in the job of guarding societies - they are in the business of locating and mining land. If societies need to be guarded or protected (ie to ensure environmerntal protection, health protection, etc), then government should more carefully regulate how the mining companies do business. Should be govenrnemnt watchdogs to monitor how such companies affect local communities.

4. organizations cannot be held accountable - ie they are simply an abstract entirty. Who can you hold responsible? Same thing here in the mining example - what do you do to the company itself? You hope the business leaders will conduct their business reposnbily but you cant really re-design a company to do your social bidding.
