Team building is very crucial for an organization to meet its organizational vision and mission and also to build a cohesive environment among the organization's workforce. According to Ivancevich an effective leader will possess the following characteristic for effective leadership. The leader provides direction and meaning to the people they are leading (Ivancevich pg. 441). A leader accomplishes this by informing its employees of the importance of the task, the beneficial outcomes of achieving the targeted goals. A leader must also generate a trust among its workforce in order to create a solid influence which will gain the organizational goal commitment the leader is seeking.
My leadership styles are a combination of director's approach, coaching style, facility approach and as well as a delegating approach. When I got promoted to the level of director it was my responsibility to guide and direct my team toward the goal that was illustrated in the action plan for the unit. I identified the needed requirements, of the present situation and created a path to handle the situation As the director of the unit it was my responsibility to be in charge of the division of work and to assign specific roles to each of my team members to achieve the organizational goals.
Coaching was also part of my leadership style by setting goals and identifying obstacles, but I consulted with my team members to establish a healthy dialog in order to implement changes that were beneficial for the unit. I respect the opinions of my team, and encourage a constant team spirit.
As a leader I truly believe in the delegating approach to leadership. In my experience in leading or building teams it is very important for the team to have a sense of democratic freedom to voice their concerns, opinions, and ideas. Having the team brainstorm and make decisions empowers them to commit to the organizational goals. The application of charisma within this area also is extremely beneficial to obtain the cohesiveness of the group/team satisfaction of solving the problems as a team.
The style of leadership I would appreciate from either my supervisor or mangers is the employee-centered leadership. Ivancevich states in the textbook this focuses on the people doing the work and believes in delegating decision making and aiding employees in satisfying their needs by creating a supportive work environment (Ivancevich pg. 445).
