Cold Stone started in 1988 at Tempe, Arizona. Its founding story shares that its owners were lovers of ice cream as well. They travelled many places to find the perfect ice cream, but having found none to satisfy, started their own ice cream concept.
Two decades down, Cold Stone has become a popular international franchise. The Singaporean outlet opened its stores just recently. One outlet is tucked away at a relatively secluded part of Orchard Road in Orchard Central. Since launch, it has gotten some rave reviews by the local blogosphere and has seen long queues into 10pm weekdays. Its success is partly attributed to its central and quiet location.
Singaporeans are spoilt for choice when it comes to premium ice cream. There are a plethora of existing local and international franchises available. Competitors include powerhouses Haagen Daz, Ben & Jerry's, Gelare, Swensens, Andersens, and new comers Udders, Island Creamry, Bobbin Robbits, Cold Rock Creamery.
The store has a lot of items, from ice cream to smoothies and cakes, each with its own unique twist. Cold Stone states that sugar are imported from America to ensure that Cold Stone customers in Singapore get the same thing elsewhere. Before the grand opening, four local employees had been sent to America's Cold Stone University to 'study', and impart their experience to other employees.
Cold Stone is decorated with big red walls, loud new music, a noisy crowd, and rich aromas. The crew tosses the ice cream into the air, performing ice cream stunts and occasionally invites interested customers to try catching their ice cream. Fresh ice cream, joyful atmosphere, it's just an unique package.
If the day is a particular customer's birthday, the entire store staff will gather together to sing the customer birthday songs and provide a lively atmosphere. Ice cream is the theme for the party.
Customers can exercise their own creativity and create their own recipes. Alternatively, they can always look to Cold Stone's classic ice creams for taste insurance.
