Cold War and Communism (Duck and Cover)
In 1951, Archer Films produced a nine minute film called Duck and Cover. This film was created to explain what people were to do in case of an atomic attack on the United States. This film utilized a cartoon turtle to draw attention from children. In the film signals were discussed, safe locations were shown, and proper body movement was portrayed. This film is considered one of the most significant films of all time by the Library of Congress.
Living under the threat of nuclear war is something all humans do every day. In the present time there are seven declared nuclear armed countries. There are at least five more countries that are suspected of owning nuclear arms and more than 17,000 nuclear bombs or missiles globally. The big players in the world have several safe guards and protocols used to launch a nuclear missile, but the suspected countries do not. Lots of these suspected countries utilize black market means to purchase and sell uranium and even entire weapon systems. If one nuclear weapon system were to fall into the right (or wrong) hands, detonation could become reality. Since the creation of the first atomic bomb, society has continually lived in threat of attack.
The nature of a nuclear attack has changed since the 1950s when Archer Films produced Duck and Cover. Their idea of a threat came from one country, a shared and common enemy. Today, threat of a nuclear attack is more likely to come from cooperation or an entity backed by several nations. These groups are categorized as terrorists and share fundamental ideals and hatred. Their interests might be secretive overthrows of governments, eradication of population, or destruction of idealism. All forms of nuclear attack are grouped together by a common grasp for control. Control over resources. There is only one earth. This earth has only so many minerals, only so much water, only so much food, and only so much oil. The commodities and resources on earth are what humans have been fighting over since the beginning of time. When utilizing the theory of Darwinism, it is only natural that we continue to create bigger and better weapon systems that create more and more destruction and damage.
Constant threat should not alter daily life. Worrying does nothing. Everyone has an expiration date, and death eventually comes for everyone.
"Movement is life, and life is movement."
