Computer Literacy
Today, computers are no longer used only for scientists and engineers. Computers are used everywhere. They are part of our modern day life and that is linked together with our education, work, and home life. With computers touching every side of our lives, the issue of computer literacy continues to grow. Why are computers crucial in today's society? I am proud of having this special skill because it will benefit me in the future.
I was not born knowing about computers automatically. I had to learn and develop my skills. I was born in 1986, so in the 90’s there wasn’t any computers or even cell phones. People were walking around with beepers and when someone would page them they would run to a payphone and call the person on their house phone. That’s what existed in my time beepers and house phones. I began using computers when Macintosh first came out. I remember when I used to play video games on the computer with my next door neighbor. While going to school there was no computers to be able to use; everyone used paper. I don’t remember how the Macintosh system graphics itself looked like because those computers came out when I was very young. As technology grew so did computer data, system graphics, and hard drives started changing, so did beepers which turned into cell phones. Because of the growth of computer technologies, we now live in an information society where information is considered extremely important and valuable material. Those who don’t have the knowledge in computers wouldn’t be able to control important information, or even know how to access or use it, whereas, someone who does know.
The ability to have a skill such as computer literacy because it can increase me getting a job. If you have basic computer knowledge along with specific job skills, employers will consider you more trainable in and adaptable to the computerized work environment. Since this ability is more used commonly in programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint or specialized programs that is well known in different companies the bookkeeping program Intuit Quickbooks it means I have advanced computer skills that other candidates do not. I may get hired into a company because I am able to use those programs at a higher level. Knowing how to use a computer allows me to get work done in more organized, efficient and timely manner, especially when I perform a job that requires computer literacy on a daily basis. I know how to manipulate different programs in order to use their features because there are features on certain programs that people don’t realize that’s on there. Those who have abilities in computers are more quickly to get a job than those who don’t have computer skills. Knowing how to use a computer could put you in a leadership position in which you can teach others how to use the computers and it’s programs. Having advanced skills
