Critical Thinking Application
Critical thinking is a valuable tool in today's organizations, and in any business
environment. Different thinking styles allow individuals to observe, analyze, and make sound
decisions based on certain information provided. Critical thinking is used in everyday life, and is
just as essential in professions. Intelligent thinking allows individuals to think before
speaking, and looking before leaping. Thinking critically assists in removing emotions and
opinions from the equation to make a decision based on facts.
Maintaining the self-discipline to be able to examine only the facts without personal bias is not easy; however, viewing alternate perceptions is essential in making any decision. Critical thinking is "the art of thinking about thinking while thinking in order to make thinking better". Thinking critically involves analyzing, evaluating, and improving thinking by examining the way people think to make thinking better (Paul & Edler, 2006). Everyone is responsible for making some type of decision in life weather it be business or personal. These skills are used in everyday activities and help thinkers to improve vital skills.
Well-cultivated thinkers "raise vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely; gathers and assess relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively; come to well reasoned solutions and conclusions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards; think open-mindedly within alternative system of thoughts, recognizing and assessing, as need be, their assumptions, implications, and practical consequences; and communicate effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems" (Paul and Elder 2006).
Critical thinking styles are flexible in the manners that allow options to explore alternatives, and change strategies to tailor to priorities and situations. There is no perfect situation to rely on. Therefore, when issues and problems arise, there needs to be a resolution to solve in a satisfactory function manner. Having a background in the insurance industry, one is challenged with issues and problems on a daily basis. It is the responsibility of the agent to examine an issue, and have a satisfying result for a customer's question or policy.
Having to deal with a different situation with every customer allows many different styles of thinking to come into play. Not every customer has the same issue. When individual customers on relying on the agent expertise, it is important to not only be able to resolve a situation, but to explain the meaning of the direction.
