Composition / Size / Market Segments

HARD CANDIES

Hard candies or rock candies are sugary candies that melt in the mouth slowly. It is also called as the boiled candies due to its dissolution effect. This is composed of large sugar crystals. Stirring sugar in a pot is its process of making hard candies. Its absorption of sugar varies on the heat of temperature during the process. After this, the water-sugar solution is set aside for several days to cool itself and form large crystals ("Hard candy," 2011).

Popular Brands of Hard Candies:

 LIPPS

Popularly known as the lipstick candy that leaves your lips with the luscious red color and the sweet taste of Strawberry. Flavor Offering: Strawberry, Mango, Tamarind. SPI Corporation is the manufacturer, a local company ("Lipps," n.d.)

 HALLS

Known to be the coolest candy in the Philippines, which comes in different variants and level of coolness. Flavor Offering: Cool Ice, Honey Lemon, Raspberry, Tropical Fruit. A British company are the one producing these candies ("Halls," 2010).

 MAXX

Also one of the menthol candies popularized in the Philippines., which also comes in many variety flavours. Flavor Offering: Lemon, cherry, Menthol. Jack & Jill Company manufactured this brand of candies.

GUM

Gum, often referred to as chewing gum or even bubblegum, is a chewy candy. Manufacturers of gums differ in their specific ingredients for chewing gums, but they all made use of the same basic process for producing. The manufacturing process is considered standard throughout the industry ("How Chewing Gum is Made," n.d.).

Popular Brands of Gums:

 JUDGE

Known for its relaxing and calming effect with every chew of the gum. It was produced in spearmint flavor ("Gums," n.d.).

 JUICY FRUIT

One of the long ago produced gums in the Philippines. Flavors Offered: Pineapple/Peach, Kiwi-Strawberry. This brand of gum is made by the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, a U.S. company since 2008 ("Juicy fruit," n.d.)

 BABY BAZOOKA

Known for its non-menthol flavored gum. SPI Corporation produced this product. ("Gums," n.d.)

GUMMY

Gummy candy is a unique candy composed of gelatin, sweeteners, flavorings, and colorings. Its nature gives it the ability to mold it into thousands of shapes. Chemists can blend the ingredients used and control its characteristics, such as texture, taste, and appearance. The primary ingredients include water, gelatin, sweeteners, flavors, and colors ("Gummy candy," 2011).

Popular Brands of Gummies:

 POTCHI

Potchi is a fat and fluffy small gummy with a round pink top and white base, covered with sugar. It is in Strawberry Flavor. This is manufactured by the Columbia International Food Products Inc.

 TROLLI GUMMY BEARS

Known for its bear-shaped gummy. Flavors Offered: Cherry, Orange, Lemon, Pineapple and Lime. This was produced by Trolli Company.

 E.FRUTTI GUMMI SOUR MINI BURGERS

Popular for its mini produced burger shape, stacked with candy bread, meat, tomatoes, and pickles. It gives the sour taste and enjoyed by eating it by its layer or wholly. E.Frutti is the manufacturer.

CHOCOLATE

Chocolate is generally used by cacao bean or what is usually heard as combination cacao and sugar. There are many different ways to prepare chocolate. It is believed that Aztecs are also known to have used this ritually and for pleasure. This chocolate was consumed with its bitter taste, may be drank or eaten ("Chocolate," 2011).

 M&M's

Known for its colourful button-shaped chocolate candies with a letter M in it. Flavors Offered: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, crisped rice, mint chocolate, peanuts, almonds, orange chocolate, coconut, pretzel, wild cherry, and peanut butter. The brand comes after the surnames of the founders Mars & Murrie ("M&M's," n.d.).

 KIT KAT

This is a chocolate-coated wafer, composed of three layer wafer coated with chocolate. This was created by Rowntree's of York, England ("Kit kat," n.d.)

 HERSHEY'S KISSES

Known for its distinctive shape of bite-sized pieces like teardrops. Flavors Offered: milk chocolate, chocolate mint, dulce de leche, Caramel Filled, Peanut butter Filled, Dark Chocolate Cherry Cordial Creme Filled, Cherry Cordial Creme Filled, Hugs, Milk Chocolate with Almonds. This brand of chocolate is manufactured by The Hershey Company ("Hershey kisses," n.d.).

LOLLIPOPS

A lollipop, or also called sucker, usually consists of flavored sucrose and corn syrup that is put on a stick for sucking or licking. Lollipops have been discovered for a century already and it already comes in different shapes and colors. Some types have a something in the middle such as gum or chewy tootsie center. Some, found mostly at carnivals or theme parks, have huge sizes that take a long time to consume. Many people today have loved lollipops already ("Lollipops," 2003).

 CHUPA CHUPS

is a lollipop company owned by the Dutch-Italian multinational corporation Perfetti Van Melle. It was first founded by the Catalan Enric Bernat. The name of the brand comes from the Spanish/Portuguese verb chupar, meaning "to suck."

Top Ten Flavours: Strawberry cream, Vanilla chocolate, Cola, Watermelon, Raspberry, Strawberry, Grape, Apple, Mango, Orange ("Chupa chups," n.d.).

 TOOTSIE POPS
