Paper 1

Last summer break, I went back to my hometown and decided to have a nice, chill break for myself after the intensive study and exams in the school. One day, my friend invited me to his birthday party at his house. Since I had nothing to do, I accepted his invitation. He also invited a bunch of other friends and we had a very pleasant chatting before the dinner. Next, we shared a lot of stories and experience back to school term. Also, we played the dice games and drank alcohol after the dinner. During that time, my friend already drank a lot however he got bad luck and he kept losing the dice game. We nearly discovered that he was exhausted after drinking certain amount of alcohol until one of the friends (his name was Jason), Jason, discovered that my friend was not comfortable as the “loser” of the dice game needs to drink alcohol. Jason immediately asked my friend to stop drinking, however, my friend seemed to be a little bit unhappy about Jason’s disturbance. I think my friend was unconscious at that stage and was going to keep drinking anyway. Jason immediately stopped him, everyone else noticed. The situation was a little bit awkward. After a while, Jason and some of us helped my friend to get back to his room and let him sleep. As soon as we sat down again, Jason said that even though he really did not want to let us feel disappointed, my friend just could not keep going. He knew that the day was my friend’s birthday and my friend could do things he wanted. But, Jason stood up and stopped my friend for the sake of my friend’s health.

Here, my definition of good would be like this: to be responsible for other people even though that may prevent them from getting what they want at certain time. In this case, Jason prevented my friend from getting the alcohol that he wanted to drink. Therefore, being responsible and taking care of other people should be the principle of good.

However, one of the big objection towards my definition of good might be: adults should be responsible for himself or herself under certain situation because we cannot keep eyes on others every time. Ultimately, it is their responsibilities to take care of themselves. Sometimes, care from others may undermine the consciousness of being responsible for oneself. Under my story’s context, the objection would then become: my friend could do anything he want at his birthday, no one actually could seizure his freedom of drinking. Also, as an adult, he should actually be responsible for his behaviors and consequences even though we are his good friends. If Jason did help him this time, who else would become the next person to help my friend if he drank a lot of alcohol next time?

Nevertheless, I hold the opinion that my notion of good is still compelling because given the circumstance above, people should give out their concerns and cares to others if other people did suffer from a hard situation. The theory that talks about if everyone could give out their hands when needed, the world would become a better place could contribute to this condition. That is, do not be hesitate or selfish when you see other people suffering from a difficulty or a dilemma. Helping others do teach the people who got helped to help more people next time they saw the similar situation.
