Many American citizens are unaware or uninformed of how the rise of the Political "party" system came to be. So just how did this new wave of politics come to be? The rise of the federalist and democratic parties were formed because of their views on federal and state governments. The federalists party, led by Thomas Jefferson believed that the state government shouldn't play a factor in most issues and that there should be a strong central government that would determine most of the issues of the country. They also wanted the Federal government to regulate trade and currency. The Federalist Party, at first much more popular, however lost their popularity with the "alien and sedation acts". The were very controversial and some would even go as far to say they limited the right of freedom of speech.

The Democratic - Republican Party, led by John Adams had almost polar-opposite views of their Federalist counter parts. They believed that states should have more power than the national government, in order to avoid any possibility of a monarchy or any resemblance to it. The Democratic-Republicans also wanted a declaration of war against England again since they saw England while the English were fighting the French. This was not a popular dicsion mostly because it went against the prior presidents, George Washington diecsion to be neutral. And they wanted to clear up old debts that they incurred before the American Revolution. Hamilton was the one that led the Federalist Party while Jefferson and Madison made the Democratic - Republican Party.
