"To perform smoothly, police agencies must be organized to enhance the accomplishment of their basic missions and goals". (Peak, K. J., 2010) The organization structure in the criminal justice system has a direct impact on law enforcement profession and its consider to be a great factor on the efficiency within the entire criminal justice system. In order for system to be effective, there must be a clear objective, a clear goal set. After that is done, then the department's organization should strive to achieve that particular objective or goal, and they will accomplish this through supervision and management. "The mission of the department, the mission's relation to the organization directly impact law enforcement." (Peak, K. J., 2010) The impact is in the various roles and responsibilities that police officers must perform on a daily basis. For example, "the role of chief executive, middle managers, and first-line supervisors is to ensure that units work together to reach a common goal." (Peak, K. J., 2010) Because if they allow each particular unit to work independently, it would lead to fragmentation, conflict, and competition and would subvert the entire organization's goals and purposes. Organizational structure its only effective if the administrators are efficient by assigning duties and conducting follow ups. "Police administrators modify or design the structure of their organization to fulfill their mission". (Peak, K. J., 2010) Keep in mind that if you have an organization structure with a strong administration, the outcome will be strong law enforcement and police officers enforcing the law. All police departments are managed by the chief of police and from there is organized into different bureaus. For example, the Administrative Services Bureau, Homeland Security and Investigation Bureau, or the Support Services Bureau. This bureaus have also smaller division that operate within the bureau. The Administrative Service Bureau has a personnel and development department, financial and contract management, police technology and technical support, planning and crime analysis, inspections and equipment services. The Homeland Security and Investigations Bureau are separated into specific categories depending on the type of crime. And the Support Services Bureau is divided by specific job functions and duties.
